Well, large, edgy, cosmopolitan cities require more street smarts, compared to little sleepy towns :)

Italy would be the same. Rome: wonderful, astonishing, but chaotic, ridden with scams, dangers and inconveniences... Siena: stunning but touristy, no real muggings but the occasional street rat or legit shop with extortionate prices for clueless tourists. Portofino: Idyllic, beautiful, but after a few pictures and a good meal, boring as hell :))

It would be the same from Mexico to Thailand, from Turkey to Australia, and in a lot of other places. Exceptions are places where there is little social inequality, in which case it levels towards the boring (little inequality and high wealth) or towards the edgy (little inequality and low wealth)
